Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

The call to discipleship is not: <ol><li>Just a New Testament command from Jesus </li><li>An invitation for one day in the future </li><li>An afterthought or suggestion</li></ol>

The call to discipleship is: <ol><li>More challenging than you think </li><li>Less challenging than you think</li></ol>

For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.

This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, says to all the captives he has exiled to Babylon from Jerusalem: “Build homes, and plan to stay. Plant gardens, and eat the food they produce. Marry and have children. Then find spouses for them so that you may have many grandchildren. Multiply! Do not dwindle away! And work for the peace and prosperity of the city where I sent you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, for its welfare will determine your welfare.”

Jeremiah wrote a letter from Jerusalem to the elders, priests, prophets, and all the people who had been exiled to Babylon by King Nebuchadnezzar.

But Daniel was determined not to defile himself by eating the food and wine given to them by the king. He asked the chief of staff for permission not to eat these unacceptable foods.

Then Daniel went home and told his friends Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah what had happened. He urged them to ask the God of heaven to show them his mercy by telling them the secret, so they would not be executed along with the other wise men of Babylon.

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego replied, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God whom we serve is able to save us. He will rescue us from your power, Your Majesty. But even if he doesn’t, we want to make it clear to you, Your Majesty, that we will never serve your gods or worship the gold statue you have set up.”

But when Daniel learned that the law had been signed, he went home and knelt down as usual in his upstairs room, with its windows open toward Jerusalem. He prayed three times a day, just as he had always done, giving thanks to his God.

New Year's Weekend

10&nbsp;Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.

Windows are channels where exchanges take place.

12&nbsp;Then he&nbsp;dreamed, and behold, a ladder&nbsp;was&nbsp;set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and there&nbsp;the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.13&nbsp;And behold, the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;stood above it and said:&nbsp;“I&nbsp;am&nbsp;the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac;&nbsp;the land on which you lie I will give to you and your descendants.

2&nbsp;And Abram was very rich in cattle, in silver, and in gold.

2&nbsp;Then the word of the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;came to him, saying,&nbsp;3&nbsp;“Get away from here and turn eastward, and hide by the Brook Cherith, which flows into the Jordan.&nbsp;4&nbsp;And it will be&nbsp;that&nbsp;you shall drink from the brook, and I have commanded the&nbsp;ravens to feed you there.”5&nbsp;So he went and did according to the word of the&nbsp;Lord, for he went and stayed by the Brook Cherith, which flows into the Jordan.&nbsp;6&nbsp;The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening; and he drank from the brook.&nbsp;7&nbsp;And it happened after a while that the brook dried up, because there had been no rain in the land. 8&nbsp;Then the word of the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;came to him, saying,&nbsp;9&nbsp;“Arise, go to&nbsp;Zarephath, which&nbsp;belongs&nbsp;to&nbsp;Sidon, and dwell there. See, I have commanded a widow there to provide for you.”

29&nbsp;And God said, “See, I have given you every herb&nbsp;that&nbsp;yields seed which&nbsp;is&nbsp;on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed;&nbsp;to you it shall be for food.

10&nbsp;Now a river went out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it parted and became four riverheads.&nbsp;11&nbsp;The name of the first&nbsp;is&nbsp;Pishon; it&nbsp;is&nbsp;the one which skirts&nbsp;the whole land of Havilah, where&nbsp;there is&nbsp;gold.&nbsp;12&nbsp;And the gold of that land&nbsp;is&nbsp;good.&nbsp;Bdellium and the onyx stone&nbsp;are&nbsp;there.

8&nbsp;So&nbsp;I have come down to&nbsp;deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up from that land&nbsp;to a good and large land, to a land&nbsp;flowing with milk and honey, to the place of&nbsp;the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites.

13&nbsp;So prepare your minds for action and exercise self-control. Put all your hope in the gracious salvation that will come to you when Jesus Christ is revealed to the world.&nbsp;14&nbsp;So you must live as God’s obedient children. Don’t slip back into your old ways of living to satisfy your own desires. You didn’t know any better then.&nbsp;15&nbsp;But now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy.&nbsp;16&nbsp;For the Scriptures say, “You must be holy because I am holy.”17&nbsp;And remember that the heavenly Father to whom you pray has no favorites. He will judge or reward you according to what you do. So you must live in reverent fear of him during your time here as “temporary residents.”&nbsp;18&nbsp;For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And it was not paid with mere gold or silver, which lose their value.&nbsp;19&nbsp;It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God.

25&nbsp;... He himself gives life and breath to everything...&nbsp;28&nbsp;For in him we live and move and exist....

16&nbsp;Your eyes saw my unformed body;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;all the days ordained&nbsp;for me were written in your book&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;before one of them came to be.

10&nbsp;For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

6&nbsp;So when the apostles were with Jesus, they kept asking him, “Lord, has the time come for you to free Israel and restore our kingdom?”7&nbsp;He replied,&nbsp;“The Father alone has the authority to set those dates and times, and they are not for you to know.&nbsp;8&nbsp;But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”9&nbsp;After saying this, he was taken up into a cloud while they were watching, and they could no longer see him.&nbsp;10&nbsp;As they strained to see him rising into heaven, two white-robed men suddenly stood among them.&nbsp;11&nbsp;“Men of Galilee,” they said, “why are you standing here staring into heaven? Jesus has been taken from you into heaven, but someday he will return from heaven in the same way you saw him go!”

36&nbsp;“However, no one knows the day or hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself.&nbsp;Only the Father knows.37&nbsp;“When the Son of Man returns, it will be like it was in Noah’s day.&nbsp;38&nbsp;In those days before the flood, the people were enjoying banquets and parties and weddings right up to the time Noah entered his boat.&nbsp;39&nbsp;People didn’t realize what was going to happen until the flood came and swept them all away. That is the way it will be when the Son of Man comes.40&nbsp;“Two men will be working together in the field; one will be taken, the other left.&nbsp;41&nbsp;Two women will be grinding flour at the mill; one will be taken, the other left.42&nbsp;“So you, too, must keep watch! For you don’t know what day your Lord is coming.&nbsp;43&nbsp;Understand this: If a homeowner knew exactly when a burglar was coming, he would keep watch and not permit his house to be broken into.&nbsp;44&nbsp;You also must be ready all the time, for the Son of Man will come when least expected.

1&nbsp;“Then the Kingdom of Heaven will be like ten bridesmaids&nbsp;who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom.&nbsp;2&nbsp;Five of them were foolish, and five were wise.&nbsp;3&nbsp;The five who were foolish didn’t take enough olive oil for their lamps,&nbsp;4&nbsp;but the other five were wise enough to take along extra oil.&nbsp;5&nbsp;When the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and fell asleep.6&nbsp;“At midnight they were roused by the shout, ‘Look, the bridegroom is coming! Come out and meet him!’7&nbsp;“All the bridesmaids got up and prepared their lamps.&nbsp;8&nbsp;Then the five foolish ones asked the others, ‘Please give us some of your oil because our lamps are going out.’9&nbsp;“But the others replied, ‘We don’t have enough for all of us. Go to a shop and buy some for yourselves.’10&nbsp;“But while they were gone to buy oil, the bridegroom came. Then those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was locked.&nbsp;11&nbsp;Later, when the other five bridesmaids returned, they stood outside, calling, ‘Lord! Lord! Open the door for us!’12&nbsp;“But he called back, ‘Believe me, I don’t know you!’13&nbsp;“So you, too, must keep watch! For you do not know the day or hour of my return.

33&nbsp;Be on guard! Be alert!&nbsp;You do not know when that time will come.&nbsp;34&nbsp;It’s like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants&nbsp;in charge, each with their assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch.35&nbsp;“Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back—whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn.&nbsp;36&nbsp;If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping.&nbsp;37&nbsp;What I say to you, I say to everyone: ‘Watch!’”

11&nbsp;“Men of Galilee,” they said, “why are you standing here staring into heaven? ...

45&nbsp;“A faithful, sensible servant is one to whom the master can give the responsibility of managing his other household servants and feeding them.&nbsp;46&nbsp;If the master returns and finds that the servant has done a good job, there will be a reward.&nbsp;47&nbsp;I tell you the truth, the master will put that servant in charge of all he owns.

39&nbsp;...&nbsp;“My Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.”

6&nbsp;... “Lord, has the time come for you to free Israel and restore our kingdom?”

9&nbsp;Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be&nbsp;your name.10&nbsp;Your kingdom come,your will be done,on earth as it is in heaven.

31&nbsp;So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’&nbsp;32&nbsp;For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.&nbsp;33&nbsp;But seek first his kingdom&nbsp;and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

Cultivate To care for something consistently so that it grows and develops into what it was&nbsp;meant to become.
